Preventing a Mouse infestation

Mouse infestations happen no matter where you live. These small rodents are always looking for somewhere warm and dry to live, and your home is at the top of their list. Here are some ways that you can prevent a rodent infestation in your home.

Keep Your Home Clean

Keeping both the inside and outside of your home clean helps prevent a mouse infestation. Mice are attracted to food, so keeping your home free of crumbs and trash is a step in the right direction. For example, if mice are outside your home and they find food, they will try to find a way into your home to find more food. Eliminating food residue right from the start will aid in preventing mice from trying to get into your home.

Seal Cracks and Holes on the Outside of Your Home

Seal off where pipes and utilities enter your home, using caulk, steel wool or a combination of both. These small holes are ways that mice can enter your home. Mice are very small and can fit into even the smallest cracks. Making sure these openings are sealed will prevent mice from getting inside.

Use Mouse Traps

If you live somewhere with a dense mouse population, consider using mouse traps in and around your home. Using traps will prevent mice from coming into your home and living there. You can place them outside where you normally see mice, or you can place them in places like basements and attics where mice usually hide.

Keep Firewood and Thick Shrubbery Away from Your Home

Mice tend to make nests in firewood and in thick brush or shrubbery. If you use firewood in your home, store it away from the entrance to your home, as mice may become curious and try to enter your home through a small crevice. If you have thick shrubbery in your yard, trim it back to prevent pests from living inside of it.
