3 Signs Your Pet May Have Fleas

As the summer rolls in, your pets are going to want to get out and investigate the world around them. If you have a pet that is known for getting into trouble, then you may be concerned about what they bring home to you. Pets can come back covered in dirt, grass, weeds, ticks and unfortunately fleas. Because of the size of fleas, they can be hard to find. But, there are a few signs that you can see to know if your pet has fleas.

Scratching

If your pet has fleas, you will likely see it scratching because they are itchy. If your pet normally doesn’t scratch, then the sudden constant attack on their skin is alarming. Flea saliva can cause an allergic reaction in dogs. Even one bite can cause days of agony. If your dog is scratching a lot, check its skin for red bumps. The symptoms can turn into a bigger issue if untreated and left the pet to continue scratching. These bumps are commonly found on the groin, belly and near the joints of their legs or tail. Excessive scratching can also cause hair loss. Even if you do not see the scratching, randomly finding patches on your pet or hair randomly throughout your house can be a sign.

The White Towel Test

Your pet has fleas if it fails a white towel test. Place a white towel on the ground and then rub your pet with a separate towel. If your pet has fleas, you will see black droppings landing on the white towel. Dirt from fleas will look like sand and turn red if it gets wet.

Flea Eggs

Flea eggs and droppings are the most direct sign of having fleas. Flea eggs look like tiny grains of rice with their oval shape and white color. Flea droppings look like tiny black dots. If you have both in an area, it will look similar to salt and pepper. If you do not see these in the kitchen, then it’s safe to assume that it’s not salt and pepper and more than likely from fleas.
