Going Green: Organic Pest Control

The word “organic” has become something of a buzz word over the last decade or so. When people hear this word it conjures up images of healthy items such as food. But did you know that your pest control can also be labeled as “organic”? If you want to learn more about what this term means and how it applies to pest control, read more.

What is Organic Pest Control?

Just like food, when it comes to pest control the term “organic” relates to whether or not the substances used are natural or not. Because pest control often involves a lot of chemicals, there is concern that these synthetic chemicals can cause damage to people, animals or the environment. When we use naturally-occurring pesticides and non-chemical substances, there is less damage on the surrounding environment and less cause for concern.

These organic substances can include a variety of materials, including those from the earth such as silica, diatomaceous earth and borates, or plant-based pesticides such as essential oils.

What Are Some Do-It-Yourself Organic Methods?

Many people try to take care of their pest control needs on their own, and they look for organic solutions. The good news is there are a variety of options to choose from. These include commercially available oils which can be effective against different pests, depending on the oil.

What do these different oils target? Here are some examples: spearmint, eucalyptus and peppermint can be used to treat spiders, aphids, fleas, ticks and ants. Lemongrass oil can be used to ward off mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and chiggers. Lavender is an effective deterrent against moths, lice and silverfish. Tea tree oil is often used against flies and centipedes.

This is just a small list of some of the do-it-yourself organic options that homeowners use to keep bug and other pests away. There are more -- including earth-based substances such as diatomaceous earth, which is effective against roaches -- but you get the idea: by using these organic materials we can protect our homes against infestations without worrying about the health risks these measures might bring with them.
