How to Spot a Cockroach Infestation

Cockroaches are fact of life in sunny Florida, but that doesn't mean they have to infest your Sarasota or Venice area home. Determining if your home is infested with cockroaches or if there is just a nearby infestation can be difficult for many homeowers. Here is what to look for when trying to spot a cockroach infestation in your home:

If you notice any substance that looks like coffee grounds where you know they should not be, it is a good indication you have cockroaches. Roaches leave droppings that are indicative of their size. So, you should easily be able to tell what size bug to look for. Leave a few glue traps out to capture a roach or two to truly identify what is infesting your home. Determining where the largest number of droppings are being left is also key to wiping them out effectively since it is a telltale sign of their scavenging and nesting areas.

Eggs/Egg Casings

Known as oothecae, roach egg casings hold multiple eggs that are either hidden during incubation or carried by a parent and then discarded right before the eggs are ready to hatch. If you find any egg casings in your home, it means roaches are nesting somewhere in the house. The type of egg case can tell you what species of roaches are infesting your home. The worst case scenario is German cockroaches, as their egg casings can hold as many as 50 eggs.

Roach Aroma

It takes a significant amount of roaches to build up an odor strong enough for you smell, but once it is there, you cannot miss it. Often described as simultaneously oily and musky, strong roach odor means you have a massive population present and you are going to need to take drastic measures to clear them out.
